In this 1xBet Ireland review, we will analyse the results at Cheltenham, where Mullins and Elliott are battling for dominance during Punchestown’s five-day jumps finale.
After the British jumps season finale at Sandown, attention now switches to Punchestown Festival, the five-day curtain closer to the National Hunt season.
With twelve Grade 1 races across the meeting, this is a championship-level week of racing. A key narrative running throughout is the trainers’ title battle between Gordon Elliott and Willie Mullins, and opportunities for both yards to land major blows.
This preview focuses on Wednesday through Saturday, where the strongest betting angles begin to emerge.
Wednesday
Channor Real Estate Group Novice Hurdle (Grade 1, 3m)
The Albert Bartlett form is central here, with The Passing Wife currently heading the market.
His profile has been progressive all season. He finished third on hurdles debut behind subsequent Grade 2 winner Thedeviluno and Grade 1 winner Skylight Hustle, a strong piece of early form. He also placed in the Royal Bond over shorter before improving significantly for a step up in trip, winning over 2m3f and then running a career best when third in the Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham.
He shaped as though the stiff finish at Cheltenham stretched him, so Punchestown’s less demanding track could suit.
Doctor Steinberg brings the highest level of form after winning the Nathaniel Lacey at the Dublin Racing Festival. His Cheltenham run can be forgiven as he raced too keenly. The addition of a first-time hood is a key detail and makes him a major player.
Fruit De Mer finished second in the Albert Bartlett, staying on strongly, but may have been flattered by racing prominently throughout. That performance represents a big step forward on his previous form.
Zanoosh arrives seeking a six-timer following a Grade 1 win at Fairyhouse, but all her victories have come on soft or heavy ground, which raises questions if conditions are quicker.
Champion I.N.H. Flat Race (Grade 1)
The Mourne Rambler sets a very high standard after his decisive Cheltenham Festival win and will be difficult to oppose if reproducing that effort.
Love Sign d’Aunou was favourite at Cheltenham but Patrick Mullins deserts him here in favour of Dromard, a 21-length debut winner at Gowran. That switch is significant, although the form came over further on heavy ground and may not translate directly.
Boycetown shaped well when finishing fourth at Cheltenham and now gains the assistance of Derek O’Connor. He looks likely to be involved at the finish.
Punchestown Gold Cup (Grade 1)
This revolves around the powerful Mullins team, headed by Gaelic Warrior and Fact To File.
Gaelic Warrior beat Fact To File in the John Durkan earlier in the season, shaping as though he outstayed him. However, Fact To File reversed that form decisively in the Irish Gold Cup, winning by 5 lengths when they last met.
Both have had mixed records at Punchestown, but on that Leopardstown evidence, Fact To File holds the stronger recent form.
However, Gaelic Warrior looked a completely different horse under Paul Townend when running away with the Gold Cup, and quicker ground would have to be a concern for Fact To File after his defeat at Kempton, and a heavy defeat at last year's Punchestown Festival. Under these conditions, Gaelic Warrior will take some beating.
The sole non-Mullins contender, Inothewayurthinkin, should not be dismissed. His Cheltenham Gold Cup third came despite doing plenty wrong early, and he stayed on strongly. On peak form, he is capable of getting involved. But, I’m not sure he can be trusted. Grangeclare West could be interesting for forecast purposes.
Thursday
Barberstown Castle Novice Chase (Grade 1)
This sets up as a rematch between Kopek Des Bordes and Kargese.
At Cheltenham, Kopek Des Bordes was only having his second chase start, while Kargese had more experience. The race was still in the balance until Kopek Des Bordes made a mistake at the last.
With that experience behind him and a slightly longer trip here, conditions look more favourable. However, it is worth noting he disappointed at this meeting last season, albeit after a busier campaign.
Champion Stayers Hurdle (Grade 1)
Bob Olinger brings the best recent Cheltenham form, but his record away from Cheltenham is a concern. His last win outside Prestbury Park came in November 2023.
Teahupoo has won the last two renewals of this race and comfortably beat Bob Olinger earlier in the season at Leopardstown.
To side with him, you must forgive his Cheltenham run, where he finished behind both Bob Olinger and Honesty Policy. However, the latter was well beaten at Aintree, suggesting that form may not hold.
Friday
Champion Novice Hurdle (Grade 1)
Willie Mullins dominates the betting, with the first seven in the market at the time of writing.
King Rasko Grey looks the standout after winning the Turners at Cheltenham, with that form boosted by subsequent Grade 1 winners behind him.
Sortudo finished second in the Ballymore and was a high-class bumper horse, but he will need to improve and did not settle well in the preliminaries at Cheltenham.
Champion Hurdle (Grade 1)
Lossiemouth is likely to go off a very short price following her fourth consecutive Cheltenham Festival win.
She has yet to run at this meeting but has won both times she has raced after Cheltenham and is unbeaten in three starts at Punchestown.
William Munny is an exciting prospect but faces a stiff task conceding weight after a layoff. Golden Ace and Anzadam appear held on known form.
Saturday
Mares Champion Hurdle (Grade 1)
This could feature a strong clash between Wodhooh, Jade De Grugy and Golden Ace.
Golden Ace may find this easier than taking on Lossiemouth but has yet to prove herself at this trip at Graded level.
Jade De Grugy won this race impressively last year and is unbeaten at the track. Her Cheltenham run came after a long absence and she is entitled to improve.
Wodhooh has strong course form but was beaten at Aintree after Cheltenham last season, so backing her at short odds carries some risk.
Champion Four-Year-Old Hurdle (Grade 1)
The Triumph form comes into play with Aplolon De Charnie.
His Cheltenham win is supported by earlier French form behind Proactif. However, the runners behind him at Cheltenham have not boosted the form since.
Feel Gut, from the Nicky Henderson yard, impressed at Warwick but lacks experience at this level.
Proactif is particularly interesting. He beat the Triumph winner by 6 lengths in France and bounced back from Cheltenham disappointment with a Grade 2 win at Aintree. If Mark Walsh chooses him over Saratoga, he could represent serious value.
