July Cup Betting Tips: Can Mission Central, Venetian Sun or Double Rush Become the Sprint Division's New Superstar?

Three Royal Ascot winners clash in a fascinating July Cup, while Emmet Kennedy identifies the value bets at Newmarket and Ascot in the new 1xBet Ireland review.

The sprint division takes centre stage on Newmarket's July Course on Saturday, where three horses who delivered for us at Royal Ascot, both on these pages and on the Final Furlong Podcast, meet in a fascinating July Cup: Mission Central, Venetian Sun and Double Rush.

Regular listeners to the Final Furlong Podcast will know all about the Sprint Wheel of Madness, born from the frustration of trying to solve Britain's Group sprint races after winners at 33/1, 200/1, 20/1, 16/1, 14/1 and last year's remarkable 66/1 July Cup winner No Half Measures. When the form book is repeatedly torn apart, it can be a punter's nightmare, unless, of course, you were following Jake Wilkes' inspired 66/1 selection.

This season, however, the sprint division finally appears to have genuine stars.

Almeraq, Mission Central and Venetian Sun all arrive as Royal Ascot Group 1 winners, while Double Rush has announced himself as an exciting handicap graduate after winning the Wokingham off a mark of 105.

Venetian Sun heads the market with 1xBet Ireland after her impressive Commonwealth Cup success. Four of the last ten July Cup winners were three-year-olds, while three came here directly from the Commonwealth Cup, including Shaquille, who completed the double in 2023.

She remains unbeaten over sprint trips and fully deserves favouritism. However, Saturday asks a different question as she meets older horses for the first time.

Interestingly, her narrowest victory came over this course and distance when edging Royal Fixation by a neck in last year's Duchess of Cambridge Stakes. That form has worked out extremely well, with Royal Fixation subsequently winning the Lowther before finishing within a length of Classic winner True Love in the Cheveley Park Stakes. Add in both the three-year-old and fillies' allowances, and it is easy to see why 3/1 could shorten further.

The obvious alternative is Mission Central.

Unbeaten in three starts this season, he produced a career-best performance when landing the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot. The step up to 6f promises to unlock even more improvement.

He sits just 2lb behind Venetian Sun on adjusted Timeform ratings, while posting the joint-highest Racing Post Rating and the second-highest TopSpeed figure in the field. Receiving the valuable three-year-old allowance, he looks a major player at around 5/1.

Oxted was the last horse to complete the King Charles III Stakes and July Cup double in the same season in 2020.

The value, however, could lie with Double Rush.

Andrew Balding's colt is unbeaten in three starts this year, having won both Newmarket handicaps previously captured by More Thunder before producing another career-best effort in the Wokingham.

The bare form says he has plenty to find, having never contested a Listed or Group race, but the ratings tell a more interesting story.

He recorded Racing Post Ratings 7lb and 8lb higher than More Thunder achieved in the same Newmarket handicaps 12 months earlier, before running to a figure 10lb superior to More Thunder's Wokingham performance despite recording a similar winning time.

His Wokingham victory came in 1 min 11.97 sec, just 0.15 seconds slower than Almeraq's Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes success over the same course and distance. The clock suggests the gap between elite sprinters and this rapidly improving handicapper may not be nearly as large as the market implies.

By Blue Point and out of a sister to Group-winning sprinter Danehurst, Double Rush has improved 20lb on official ratings since joining Andrew Balding.

He still needs to find around 5lb to match Mission Central and Venetian Sun while conceding them weight, but that level of improvement is far from impossible for such an unexposed colt.

At double-figure odds, with Oisin Murphy in the saddle, he makes the most appeal from a betting perspective.

Comanche Brave disappointed at Royal Ascot but is not one to dismiss. Billy Loughnane takes over for the first time and, at around 20/1 with 1xBet Ireland, he could easily outrun his odds if this division returns to the unpredictability that defined last season.

Zeus Olympios has yet to reach the heights I expected this season.

His reappearance can be forgiven, but his subsequent defeats in Group 1 company have been slightly underwhelming. A return to Group 2 level offers him an excellent opportunity to get back on track.

Unbeaten in his first four starts, he signed off last season with an excellent victory over subsequent Group 1 winner Opera Ballo at Newmarket.

More Thunder is the obvious danger after finishing ahead of him in two Group 1 races this season. However, Saturday's pace forecast looks modest and More Thunder is at his best when delivered off a strong gallop.

If Sam James can dictate matters aboard Zeus Olympios, he could prove difficult to peg back. At around 4/1, he looks attractively priced.
